The Yakult Central Institute is the nerve centre of Yakult’s research and development (R&D) operations. As a leadingedge research facility in the field of probiotics, the institute conducts research on beneficial microorganisms that can support and improve human health and aid in recovery, with a focus on intestinal microbiota that is grounded in the principles of preventive medicine and a healthy intestinal tract leads to a long life.

The fruits of this research led to the development of ingredients for food and beverages, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. In the field of food and beverages, the institute conducts R&D for the benefit of human health, drawing on the extraordinary power of microorganisms.

The cultured milk drink Yakult contains a premium probiotic – Lactobacillus casei strain Shirota, which was originally discovered and developed by our founder, Dr. Minoru Shirota. These probiotics are stronger and scientifically proven to withstand gastric juice and bile to reach the intestines alive and help to maintain a healthy digestive system. Each little bottle of Yakult contains more than 10 billion L. casei strain Shirota, which are exclusive to Yakult and cannot be found in other cultured milk drinks.

Committing to the holistic wellbeing of society, Yakult Singapore embarked on the following Corporate Social Responsibility activities:

  • Supporting community health: Yakult has been allies with the National Foundation for Digestive Diseases (NFDD), and has been sponsoring NFDD’s public symposium since 1988. Yakult has also been the main sponsor of the Singapore Cancer Society’s (SCS) annual Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month since 2002, and has been in support with SCS’s other events such as Race Against Cancer and Relay for Life.
  • Supporting sports excellence: Yakult has been supporting Singapore Swimming Association and FINA Swimming World Cup as the official healthy family drink since 2009. With a three-year sponsorship renewal, Yakult has become the longest running partner and has extended its sponsorship till 2021.

The multi-million-dollar Yakult plant in Senoko Avenue houses the world-class production system that has earned accreditation in international quality, safety and hygiene standards. For obtaining 23 consecutive years of Grade A certification, from 1995 to 2017, the Yakult factory received the ‘Platinum Award’ for excellence in food hygiene, sanitation and processing from the Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority (AVA) of Singapore. This has led to more customer confidence in our product – Yakult.
